Review - Keep Me Still by Caisey Quinn

Keep Me Still

Keep Me Still

By
Caisey Quinn

Blurb:

Scarred by loss, Layla leaves her hometown of Hope Springs, Georgia, hoping to put her painful past behind her and start over in college in California. When she runs into Landen at freshmen orientation, she has a choice to make. Reinforce those steel walls she's built up around herself or give the only boy who can keep her still a second chance.

Landen’s more than ready to tear down those walls, but this time when they come crashing down, they might bury her.

Info:

As a Caisey Quinn Fangirl, I would read almost anything she writes. No really, I would actually read a story about toilet paper if she wrote it!

But no matter how many stories of hers I read (Girl with GuitarGirl on Tour)...Her stories just keep getting better!

My version of Keep Me Still includes a copy of Let You Leave which is a prequel Novella so I'll requiew the two of these together.

Let You Leave Blurb:

Layla Flaherty had the perfect life, or close to it. Until a stranger gunned her parents down right in front of her, leaving her with seizure inducing PTSD. After years of trying to pass as normal and failing miserably, she resigns herself to being invisible. But new to town Landen O’Brien sees her, and he likes what he sees. Much to Layla’s surprise, he doesn’t freak out when she has a seizure in front of him. He does the exact opposite, calming her until the tremors subside. But Landen has secrets of his own. Secrets that will either bind them together or tear them apart.

Review:

"He holds me, he keeps me still. Like he always has"

This is such a stunning novel - it covers some very difficult topics, such as abuse, violence, death, PTSD, illness and young love, and it covers them beautifully.

Lets start with Let You Leave as this is where the story truly begins.

Layla is a young girl who is trying her damn hardest to get through her Senior Year unnoticed. Which, for any normal teenage is difficult, but for her, it is almost impossible. Because she is "Freaky Flaherty" - The Orphan. The Orphan who's parents were shot in front of her. The Orphan who suffers from seizures.

Landed is an athletic High School student who travels all over America following his Dad - An Army Colonel with one hell of a temper. He only sticks around to protect his fragile Mom.

None of them are actually living - they are both just Surviving

Then their eyes meet in the school hallway and both of their lives change forever.

This beauriful novella helps us inderstand the story in Keep Me Still, it gives us an intro to our lead characters and sets the scene for their college lives.

Keep Me Still...I honestly don't know how to put into words just how stunning a story this is. It is touching, heart breaking, full of loss and leaves you full of hope.

I don't want to give too much of this story away but what I will tell you is this:

  • Layla is a strong young woman going through what can only be described as turmoil
  • Landen loves Layla more than he ever thought possible - he would do anything for her
  • Layla's Aunt Kate is a bit of a controlling bitch, even if it is meant with the best of intentions
  • Corin, Layla's roommate, will make you laugh with her witty one liners and outlook on life
  • You will NEVER look at Cherries in the same way EVER again...

Keep Me Still will break your heart - over and over again. Just when you think all hope is lost, something incredible happens and restores your faith in humanity. It will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling and with a huge contented smile on your face!

I absolutely loved it!
Caisey Quinn my Gorgeous Girl...you did it again!

EXCERPT

“Tell me what you want,” I demand, pulling her two wrists into one of my hands. I lift them above her head so I can feel her body on mine without our hands in the way.

“I want…” She pauses to swallow, and I don’t know why I need her to ask for it…but I do. I need to know that this is what she wants. That I’m the one she wants. “I want to have fun, to stop worrying and feeling guilty all the time just for being alive.”

That wasn’t exactly the response I was hoping for, but beggars can’t be choosers. “And how should we go about making that happen? Specifically,” I clarify, letting my lips rest just a few inches from hers. I can feel her breath on my mouth. “Tell me what I can do to help.”

Her little pink tongue swipes her lips, coming so close to my own I can practically taste her, and I nearly come undone right then and there. “You should kiss me.” I move in closer, but only a tiny bit.

“And why would I do that?” Her voice is so low I have to lean in to hear her clearly. “Because you want to. Because I’ve been waiting for a very long time. Because you can.” Her words fill me with heat and need. I want so much more than to kiss her. But I’m not going to get greedy here and risk losing her all over again. My plan to make her jealous earlier was just a ploy to get her to admit she still wants me because I still want her. I’m pretty positive I’ll always want her. So now this has to be the best damn kiss two people ever shared in the history of kissing because I need her to want it again and again. Tension builds in my chest at the thought of finally kissing Layla Flaherty, and I’m a little afraid of screwing up her first kiss. But I owe it to her. It should’ve happened a long time ago.

“Someone’s overthinking things,” she whispers against my lips, and I twitch with anticipation and nostalgia. It’s the exact phrase I used to use on her when she’d go off in her head. She remembers. Dammit, I’m losing control. I tighten my grip on her wrists and run my nose down her cheek. I place a soft kiss on her earlobe and feel her body sag forward as her legs buckle beneath her. Using my other arm to hold her around the waist and keep her vertical, I whisper,

“Here? Is this where you want me to kiss you?” Her breath comes in quick gasps, and she shakes her head no. So I let my lips skim the side of her face and holy hell, she even tastes like peaches. And I should definitely not be thinking about tasting her, but a torrent of images unleashes itself. I know I’m gripping her too hard, but she doesn’t complain. I press myself against her and place a chaste kiss on her cheek.

“Here?” I ask, doing my best to feign innocence.

“Uh uh,” she groans, and I brush my face against hers until our lips are touching.

“Here?” “Yes, please,” she says against my mouth, and I try to take it slow, I really do. But when her lips part, opening her to me, I’m done being gentle. My tongue sweeps inside, desperate for hers. She’s tentative at first. Barely skimming her tongue against mine with sweet little licks. But I press harder and she matches me. Layla lets her teeth graze my lower lip and I groan. I release her wrists and she wraps her arms around my neck, raking her hands into my hair. Keeping my hand out from under her short dress is an exercise in torture. My body aches for release, but this is her first kiss. We have to stop here. For now. .

Girl with Guitar

**4 Solid Stars**

Girl with Guitar

Blurb (stolen from the author because I SUCK at writing blurbs!):

After Kylie’s dad dies in a freak accident, he leaves her with nothing other than her crazy stepmother, Darla, and the ability to play guitar. When Darla kicks Kylie out and she loses her job all in the same day, she hops a bus to Nashville determined to make her late father’s dreams come true. Waitressing and saving her pennies to record a demo, her big break comes when she’s asked to join a tour going down the tubes with once platinum album-selling country music superstar Trace Corbin. But touring with Trace is hardly a dream come true since he’s pretty much drinking his career down the drain. If Kylie can’t pull Trace out of his rut, he’ll pull her and her dreams down with him.

Let me begin by saying a huge thank you to Caisey Quinn for providing me with my first ever ARC :) you rock Caisey!!

This book is refreshingly new feeling - I don't feel like its been covered by other authors (like beautiful disaster, falling into you, slammed etc) [nb. I adored all of those books] which made it a pleasure to read.

The opening line "Hi Daddy" almost had me in tears, it's very unusual for a book to give me such deep feeling so quickly. I hated Trace and loved him, I felt compassion for him, then I wanted to slap him, I wanted to cuddle him, then I wanted to shake the stupid out of him, I wanted to make love to him, then I wanted to scream at him. Caisey was very good at writing a mixed up character!

Laughed so hard at the poker scene - like gut clutching laughed!

I'm going to give you my only negatives - I struggled to understand the attraction that Kylie suddenly felt towards Trace after him being what can only be described as an asshole. I felt the pace of the book was a touch too fast, a lot had happened in only 4 or 5 chapters.
